Burbank fire sunset 2

Samsung Galaxy S7, 4mm @ f/1.7, 1/1264 s, ISO 50. Pro mode and messed with the colors and stuff. Saturation probably all the way up and color balance on custom too.

Taken from inside the terminal at Burbank shortly after the previous picture. The quality isn’t anywhere near as good but I like the composition a whole lot better.

There was a wildfire that just started near the Burbank airport that Friday. All the smoke made it dim and a crazy looking sunset (even the sun was nowhere near the horizon).

This evening there was some lightning out near Edwards. This sign is just down the road from the hotel, so I thought it would be super cool to grab a photo with it in the frame. Took around 250 photos and only got a couple that were worth it. Stood in the door of my car with the camera propped up on the roof, had to keep moving it as the storm moved. It also rained out in the desert while I was taking these.

Samsung Galaxy S7, 4mm @ f/1.7, 1/15 s, ISO 50. Pro mode and messed with the colors and stuff. Saturation probably all the way up and color balance on custom too.

This was two days after the eclipse, so the moon was a super-cool crescent setting over the Sierra Nevada. My camera was in the car or hotel room or something, I was just getting back to the hotel after dinner.

Mojave sunset

Sony α6500, Sony E 10-18mm f/4 @ 17mm f/4, 1/25 s, ISO 100. Vivid color profile with +3 saturation, manually set 6500K white balance.

There were some neat lenticular clouds all day, but it looked like the sunset was going to be a bust since it was going to go behind clouds before it got orange. I walked out of the Stater Bros from my weekly shopping and saw this sunset. I quickly drove like a mile out of town to get the power lines and buildings out of the way, pulled off the side of the highway, stood on my car and snapped this.

Sony α6500, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN @ f/4, 1/640 s, ISO 100. Vivid color profile with +3 saturation, manually set 6300K white balance.

I woke up from a nap and saw this palm outside my hotel room window in the evening light.

Sony α6500, Sony E 10-18mm f/4 @ 10mm f/5.6, 1/160 s, ISO 100. Vivid color profile with +3 saturation, manually set 7000K white balance.

This Convair 990 is the gate guardian outside the Mojave airport. This aircraft was used by NASA during testing of the Space Shuttle landing gear, strapped into a bay in the center fuselage. The light was critical here, the same picture I snapped literally one minute later looked like crap.

There’s an industrial park inside the Mojave airport, including this trainyard. Trains run through Mojave all the time but I’ve never actually seen one peel off to stop in the city.

Sony α6500, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN @ f/1.4, 1/30 s, ISO 4000.

A little bit after the sun went down the colors seemed super saturated, so I snapped a picture of the flowers in our backyard. I don’t remember what this species is called.

Stars over Lancaster

Sony α6500, Samyang 12mm f/2 @ probably f/2, 13 s, ISO 1000.

This is the sky over Lancaster, CA as seen from a little ways outside of Mojave. It’s still early in the night so that top streak is a satellite.

Sony α6500, Samyang 12mm f/2 @ probably f/2, 4 s, ISO 100.

I took a bunch of long exposures of the mortars we launched off, this was probably the best. Next time I need to make sure I don’t get the trees in the way.

L-29 pilot

Sony α6500, Tamron 18-200mm Di III VC @ 39mm f/6.3, 1/160 s, ISO 100.

This is a guy who works down there in Mojave, he owns his own L-29, an old Czech jet trainer. I was there one morning during one of his first test flights. There was also a professional film crew down there getting some footage, including a chase plane with the door taken off. This is shortly after he got in the cockpit. His first takeoff roll was aborted due to faulty oil pressure gauge, so I actually missed the takeoff.

Sony α6500, Tamron 18-200mm Di III VC @ 18mm f/8, 1/320 s, ISO 100. I probably had a polarizer on.

I drove up to Tehachapi one time I was down in Mojave. It’s surprisingly green for how close it is, a little bit of altitude makes the climate a lot more mild. There’s also a lot of windmills out there.

Sony α6500, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN @ f/1.7, 1/200 s, ISO 100.

There were tons of interesting characters at Sakura-Con, but I was new to photography so I didn’t manage to take many good photos.
